Charles' Rules of Argument

I do some of these by accident, some on purpose. (No, I'm not sure which ones are which.)

oh!oh! who wants to argue about the rules of arguing??? I DO! I DO!

just kidding.

or am i?

at first i thought the point of the rules was to save yourself frustration. (don't re-explain. don't continue pointlessly, etc.) but towards the end he reveals another goal which is winning, or, at least SOUNDING as if you've won. ahh. winning. that is something that just doesn't really happen very much in an argument.

here's another thought; arguing/debating, when done correctly can lead to greater understanding of the world. clarification. this not that. that not the other. peanut butter not jelly. of course, both parties have to be open to the possibility that there are things in the conversation that they don't understand or are even wrong about. these types of conversations are indeed rare. people who are searching for a deeper understanding of the world around them are actually really difficult to engage in debate.

another tip for debate might be never debate someone who has been on the debate team in high school. they have been coached to always try to "win points."
