Damn! That term was coined by me and JetFuel, sun-drunk and driving back from BMan '98. Makes me proud that it's taken a life of its own.

The correlation with the free software model is something I'd not really explicitly thought out before, but it really is much the same thing.

I find it interesting that they've really thought out the negatives too.

I thought it was me and JetFuel and Sodyum, drunk at El Garage NYE.

Either way, they've really got a good handle on it. I would add some stuff if I wasn't so lazy. And late for a meeting.

I wrote it up in a document published in 1987...(true).

But as we all know, if it is not on the web, it never happened.

No shit? What document? What was it about?

Well, we'll chalk this one up to "great minds think alike" or something like that. Considering the number of times I've sat around and heard various people say "Hey, this is not a democracy", you'd figure once in awhile someone else will stumble into that neologism.

I made a joke in a design guide for a product I wanted to build. Funny enough, I’m building it now, almost 20 years later. It is a task tracking a project management system…which…I used to organize our camp of 40 that went to Burning Man…

It allowed the team to track and do everything themselves, and know what everyone else was doing. It went GREAT.

I have a recently reawakened interest in the general class of life-enhancing organizational technologies. I've been reflecting on the effect AD/HD has of amplifying the chaos/order cycles that individuals naturally go through. In my case, I've reinvented my wheels many, many times, and I'm heading into a new peak of reverse entropy right now where I'm resurrecting many of my old systems and habits -- the visual image I'm thinking of is the scene in Tron where the guy waves his hand at a virtual-world junkyard and "assembles" one of the vehicles from a computer game he'd been the author of...

Right now I'm on the Basecamp/Backpack/Blinksale sort of bandwagon with syncing to a Treo smartphone and PersonalBrain thrown in. I might bring back some of the telephony service stuff I was using, too. I also make heavy use of Microsoft Outlook's "Journal" feature, with some custom scripting. I just recently adopted a Google Calendar, but the jury's still out on that one. I'm hunting for ways to view and integrate time-series data.

I'd be happy to beta-test your incipient category-killer; would sign required NDAs, etc.

I simply need your Email.
Encode it here, and I will tell you delete after I get it.

Also, do you have any intersting in starting a Hike the Geek in your area? (www.HIKEtheGEEK.com).

If so, I can invite you to a project that makes sense, other wise I will just throw you into a den of lions...

In my system...you need to have a reason to be invited, it makes more sense over time.

Well, in checking out the site, I find that it inspires me to go hiking, but I'm transitioning between work projects and cannot at this moment make commitments to things that happen at a *particular* time.

I am, however, willing to be a main point of contact, and I could do things like "make sure to post about upcoming events to relevant local lists", "encourage people to participate", "answer questions by email", "do research on area facilities". If that would be sufficient, make it so. Otherwise, I'll take the lions!

Indeed -- it seems it was a term and an idea that was going to happen no matter what.

You can *all* be proud of independently inventing and spreading a good, very useful meme.
