from linguaphiles: How do you pronounce the English language word "jaguar" and where do you live/did you grow up?

at first i was amazed that there were so many very different ways to pronounce a word, all correct.

but after sounding out many of the responses, i 'realized' "oh, those are just accents. ...they don't really mean the word is _supposed_ to be pronounced that way."

self-WTF?

tell your students: by learning the rules, they earn the right to break them.

and 'tis important to learn the "why" behind the rules - the context and often their relationship to POWER. Those who have it, those who don't.

... you must have read my mind because this topic of yours has been on my mind since my thursday evening class - and how to get all this across. :)
