from linguaphiles: How do you pronounce the English language word "jaguar" and where do you live/did you grow up?

at first i was amazed that there were so many very different ways to pronounce a word, all correct.

but after sounding out many of the responses, i 'realized' "oh, those are just accents. ...they don't really mean the word is _supposed_ to be pronounced that way."

i mean at some point, the physical structure of each individual person's speech organs makes a difference. the 'ideal', 'correct' speech would have to be some blended average of all the common ranges of the components of physical speech. (similar to the blended-face-morphing studies of beauty.)


you know, even if we had the ability to use digital replay of idealized sounds instead of whistling and flapping our meat... we'd just use it to add hints of noises and music to our speaking, the better to approach whatever idea it is we're trying to give voice.
