Is it just me, or are all the 'Ads by Google' appearing in Japanese today?

I, for one, welcome our new robotic overlords. They will usher in a new era of peace, prosperity, rationality, and impeccable politeness.

I looked more closely at the "problem". I'm running a custom Proxomitron setup that spoofs Referer: as the requesting URL and rewrites all references to location.href so that they fail.

Until recently, I blocked cookies as well. But when I got my Google Maps API registration, I finally started allowing google to feed me cookies.

So the poor little ad box knows who I am, but is very, very confused about where I'm coming from and where it is -- and it has been prevented from doing anything about it.

More details/pictures/HTTP logs are available if needed.

Our content ads don't set any cookies. And they are served from a separate domain, so they don't get cookies set by google.com.

I'm not sure exactly how we know which page to use as context for the ads, but I'm surprised you are seeing anything but public service announcements with that setup. I'm actually surprised you see our ads at all, if your proxy is messing with javascript that much.
