*** Game Night tonight! ***

Game Night!
Thursday, 2005-04-28 19:30 (7:30pm) until very late
Sasona Co-op
2604 Paramount Ave.
Austin, TX 78704
(near Kerbey Lane South)
( 5 1 2 ) 6 1 9 - 2 8 9 1

Come on in and ask for me, "Trip".

BYOB or whatever, and I recommend bringing a snack
if you're staying late -- I usually keep playing until
the wee hours of the morning. Alternately, we have
stores and restauraunts within walking distance.

We have quite a few amenities and plenty of space for
multiple games at once.

Let me know if you have any special requests, and feel free
to bring games you like! I'll also provide a safe home for
any games you'd like to store here at Sasona.

One of the things that I think was rather unusual about Bellaire was that there didn't seem to be much of a "popular" crowd per se. At least, when I was there, there were a bunch of interlocking circles, with pretty heavy overlap. You had the jouralism/yearbook people, the IB/AP people, the sci-fi/fantasy people, the drama people, the band people, a group of people kind of being loners, but all together (which is probably what you identify as the "skater/goth crowd"), a small number of hardcore computer geeks, the Russian crowd (in addition to a large number of other language nerds), various kinds of sports people, etc. But there wasn't, as far as I could tell, a group that could be properly identified as "popular people." I tended to move in all those circles to some degree -- there wasn't much in the way of exclusivity or ostracism from most social groups at that school.

I had the same experience as you did of a lot of people I wasn't familiar with seeming to know me. (I have the same experience in my professional life also; I think I must just be memorable and/or exceedingly approachable in some way).

I agree that Mr. Wallin was great. I was Drama Club secretary my senior year. I still have a key to The Black Box somewhere, assuming they haven't changed the lock out yet. :)

I agree with you about that phenomenon. I attribute it to the fact that the school was pretty big. That dynamic really changed though in 94 when the district lines changed. It was the first time we had (active) gangs and the school seemed to subconsciously divide itself into an upper and lower crust. I heard rumors that in 95 or 96 metal detectors were added.

Hmmmm....The Black Box :) Many fond memories. I was on tech mostly and we used to spend class time under the risers (built in 91 I think) playing poker. Those were really some of the best years in theatre - Wallin created a class just for people who he felt were really good and we put on 2 main stage performances and 8 BB shows in a semester. The guy who headed up crew was planning to be an architect, so we used to do sets with drywall instead of plywood and in-set wiring for light switches and doorbells and such. We lived at Home Depot! I remember getting on the news when we did Grand Hotel - we had the last and longest spot of the events section. While Phantom of the Opera got a one sentence mention we had a little expose with 4 interviews!! Teehee. I was ASM and running crew head for the show - exhausting but one of the best experiences of my life!!

In 96 Wallin was let go because the assistant principle (can't remember her name atm) was really enamored of this guy who was The Marlborough man in the commercials (you know - NO LINES!) and thought he would be a better teacher since he had TV experience. Needless to say the department plummeted rapidly. The guy tore out the risers in the BB and stopped doing the winter musicals. Tragedy.

On another note...theatre can account for all my on campus sex - see it really IS evil!!

I think I still have my BB key as well....and likely the one that went to the padlock on the risers (not that it would do any good now).
