Snap your fingers, snap your neck

mood: hungryhungry
music: Prong - Snap Your Fingers, Snap Your Neck

When I Was Little I decided I really wanted to be able to snap my fingers. It seemed simple enough, but I didn't know how. So I just kept trying. I assigned the problem to my subconcious mind, and spent idle moments moving my fingers in ways that might lead to the correct sequence. I have no idea how long this went on, probably not too long, before I got the hang of it. Snap snap snap snap snap.

Sometimes, if I'm agitated or excited, and not sure what action to take, AND pacing back and forth, that physical memory will surface and I'll start doing it again. Snap snap snap snap snap.

Mercifully rare. But interesting to notice.

I went through the same thing- all my friends could snap except for me, so I kept trying and trying. Finally, in the shower, my fingers slipped just enough and I snapped with my left hand.

I quit trying quite as hard after that and, to this day, I faux-snap with my right hand when 2 handed snapping is necessary....

i did this exact thing with whistling and tying shoes, which helps when pacing back and forth.

How did you manage to practice the shoe(lace) tying without thinking about it?

I'm snapping the fingers on my right hand for the first time since July. Yay.

I've met a few people who have a hungry mood. Most notably, my father, who was unnecessarily mean and angry when he hadn't eaten in a while. My sisters and I didn't say he was "angry"; we whispered, "he's hungry", and that conveyed his mood perfectly.

Along similar lines, I confess that ever since 1992, when Dave Miller and I discovered the "talk" function on Unix (and lived across the country from one another), I sometimes find myself typing subconsciously as I speak or think. My fingers move, barely perceptibly, on an invisible keyboard in my mind. It's downright frightening. On the other hand, it is convenient to be able to type like a madwoman.
