mood: curious curious

So today I did heavy programming stuff in the X Window System (X Protocol Version 11) and SDL (particularly the event system) on Ubuntu Linux (in the GNU debugger), and some tinkering with development tools on Mac OS X 10.4.

I like my job. I get to do such random things.

On my own time, I've also successfully got signals from my new 3D Space Commander into the Torque Game Engine and world editor under Linux! Haven't put in the events code for it yet, but... we get signal! I'm going to do it up proper and tie it into the Action Maps for easy remapping in script, and publish it as a resource to the GG site.

How does the Space Commander present itself to the OS and Torque? As a mouse, joystick, or what?

It's an unspecified HID device; it comes with a driver that translates the signals into X Window Manager messages. I'm using a non-proprietary replacement for that driver that someone wrote. under Linux, the SDL event library can be instructed to pass these Window Manager messages along wrapped as SDL events. That's where I am bringing the signals into Torque.

Of course, there are many, many other ways it *could* be done....

heh. I'm in New Orleans the 22nd-26th, and then in Mountain View the 30th-5th. After that, I am hopefully ensconced in bright shiny new job and life stabilizes again. Or, y'know, as stable as it gets. What're your constraints?
