Proxomitron is cool. I wrote my first useful Proxomitron filter today.
Can you guess what it does?

That's right. It also means I never have to see or read the interstitial page that's being clicked, which is even more of a savings of my precious atttention. :)

and mind you, all this is happening on a tab I'm not even watching, because I've moved on to several other tabs/pages.

Proxomitron vs. Privoxy

So... as Proxomitron was no longer being developed, I switched to Privoxy (www.privoxy.org) and have been quite happy with it. I liked the idea of being able to write my own filters for Proxo, but I knew I'd never get around to it. I find the configuration of Privo to be all I need.

Have you tried both? Did you opt for Proxo after that, and if so, why?

I used to use junkbuster, then I graduated to Guidescope, its larger-scale, community-based version. Lately it had been seeming slower, and finally I jumped ship.

I started using Proxomitron because I want to see the web through me-colored glasses, and I'd say mess up people's pixel-perfect layouts by deleting things muhahaha, but really that isn't the style anymore, things just fall out gracefully.

I'm happy at the moment with firefox's adbuster extension and Proxomitron. I figure I'm good for another year or so with that combo.

Privoxy is good for doing what I used to use Guidescope for, I might try it again. But what I really miss is the driver-level locked-down firewalls I used to have on windows 98. There are probably things like it available for XP and stable enough now, but they're all these huge suites and full of things that can go wrong.

Anyway, hold the phone. I may have found something EVEN BETTER than the filtering of Proxomitron. Watch this space....
