"One day I woke up in Miami"

mood: sleeeeeepy

Hey, um, I won't be home this weekend. I'm writing from mid-roadtrip to the annual NASCO Institute event in Ann Arbor, Michigan. I just finished my driving shift - 5 hours straight! A personal record, at least in recent memory. I find myself (for this brief moment) in the exquisitely-named city of... Effingham, Illinois. Effingham! Say it with an exclamation point! "WTF? Effingham!" I just made them that new slogan. They are welcome to use it.

What the hell are you talking about, Trip?
I'm the board chairman of a nonprofit organization in Austin that exists to encourage expansion of cooperative housing options and operates Sasona Co-op in South Austin, a 17-member house that was previously a school. I have the tiniest room and I find it ideally cozy. We have the awesomest wooden playground in the tree-lined, spacious backyard.

When I was in high school, I went to Effingham to watch the state track meet (one of my friends and teammates was competing). I went as part of a group of 4 giddy high school girls. There's not much to do in Effingham so we went and played a Whack-a-mole game, cheated shamelessly, and one enough tickets for all of us to purchase four plastic harmonicas. We then created a bluesy song on the way home whose refrain was "cause daaaaamn, I'm in Effingham."

We went through it again on the way back!

I made everyone sing that refrain. I like it.

Fond memories of the NASCO trip!

Truck stops. People thought a van full of hippies with a sign saying "LOADED" with a peace sign in the "o" was a church band.

The drunkest I've ever been and still able to walk. Beer stays colder there.

Indian summer. Leaves in mid-change.

Lots of little snippets without apparent meaning: "Anything metal with bolts." "Lima, Ohio" "Fear of a Guff planet."

Yes...have fun. I'd love to hear the stories when you return.

I'm hoping to make something like a co-op one day... more of a commune, actually... when that day comes, can I steal some of your time for advice?
