Sleep vs. Energy vs. Introversion: a theory well worth testing

WHEREAS,
I tend to have enough energy in a day to stay up late and perpetuate a 30-hour cycle;

WHEREAS,
I also tend to be a hermit, due to finding communication with others to be potentially exhausting;

THEREFORE,
Perhaps there is an energy imbalance there due to overcompensation-- an energy surplus that literally keeps me up at night;

RESOLVED,
That I will purposefully seek interaction with others more, and more often, during my day and see if it regulates my cycle.

You need to use people to wear you out.

I know for me that balancing social interaction and time alone is one of my biggest struggles. When I can get the balance just right I feel amazing. When I don't get it right I feel stressed and overwhelmed or lonely.

The hardest part for me is that the necessary balance changes from week to week depending on what's going on at work, my hormones, and possibly planetary alignments. :)

You will have to let me know how the experimenting goes.

I didn't realize that extended sleep cycles were such an issue for you, or I might have spoken up sooner.

I have a great deal of personal experience with "Delayed Phase Sleep Disorder", as that extended cycle is medically known, though mine was not that bad. (My body seemed to favor 28 hour days when I was younger (early 20's), and maybe 26 hour days now. Your sleep cycle tends to shorten is you get older.)

Your theory is interesting and worth trying, but I have a number of other suggestions too if you would like them.

I'd love to hear the suggestions. I'm a compulsive researcher.

Though it's been so long since I've had a sleep cycle, I don't really think in terms of "day" and "night". :)

"Delayed Phase Sleep Disorder" - I like it. Sounds like something from ST:TNG.

Note that it's not like insomnia -- I can sleep if I remember to want to. Sometimes I can sleep even when NOT tired. Plus, there seems to be more than one kind of "tired", but I'm not sure I can explain that.

I found that that did work for me to a fair extent. I used to be kept up at night, and even tried the 30 hour sleep cycle thing for a while, but I found once I started having meaningful interactions with people I started getting tired around 11pm, and sleeping from midnight to 8am... it'll be interesting to see if I end up spending less time with other people during the university holidays and if it slips again because of it.

808 State! That is totally awesome! I haven't met anyone in 10 years that knows/remembers that band.

Check out the official 808 State site. They have a "new" album (from 1988) out as of 2004-10-04.

'One of the reasons we got together was we all had bits of equipment but not enough to experiment with. The more boxes we could wire together the better. Gerald never had plugs on his gear and would jam bare wires into the mains with matchsticks. If we needed a new lead, we would cut an old one in two. I remember a scary moment when we played a rave in Victoria Baths with the pool open, and everyone's in the water dancing water-hockey style, and there's all Gerald's bare wires.'
